Diabetes can cause two main problems with the feet. The elevated blood sugar can effect the circulation and the nervous system. This results in a decrease in blood flow to the feet (poor circulation) and a loss of sensation to the feet. The loss of sensation in the feet is called
peripheral neuropathy. Those with neuropathy lose the ability to sense pain and other sensations on their feet. This increases the risk of developing open sores, or
ulcerations. Those diabetics who also have poor circulation will have difficulty healing the ulcerations and will have a higher chance of developing infections and in severe cases, gangrene.
