My feet roll to the inside - straining the legs. I put in arch supports and this helps - but they are uncomfortable and not fully effective. What else can I do to correct this condition?
If your feet roll in enough to strain your legs then you most likely have a fair amount of pronation in your feet. This is the rolling in and associated collapse of your arch. An orthotic is usually needed to control the motion in the foot and prevent the rotation in the legs.
If you were using a flexible and soft insert, this most likely did nothing more than add some cushion to your shoes. Even soft arch supports can be uncomfortable for individuals with pronation. You need a sport orthotic or a more rigid type of arch support to help control the motion in your foot. Although it would seem that a rigid insert would be more uncomfortable, in most individuals with over-pronation they are more comfortable.
You may want to visit a podiatrist and be evaluated to see if you need custom made orthotics. The down side of custom made orthotics is their cost $300-$600 and not all insurance companies cover them.
If you want to try another pair of arch supports, make sure you pick a sport orthotic or more rigid arch support from a sports store or try a moldable arch support for more comfort.
