Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive procedure for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, such as plantar fasciitis. The therapy uses sound waves to cause controlled tissue injury at an area of chronic inflammation or degeneration and stimulate a healing response by the body.
The advantages of ESWT, over surgery, is that patients can return to their regular daily activities and regular shoes within a few days after treatment. There are very few complications and the success rates have been reported at 80-90%.
The disadvantages are that the procedure is expensive and the results from many of the randomized controlled trials have been conflicting. This means that the procedure is still under scrutiny for it's overall effectiveness, and many insurance companies won't cover this treatment.
